Shortcut keys to take screenshots in Microsoft Windows

Print screen button.

The easiest way to take a screenshot of a window is to use the print screen button. This key will capture the overall screen area. This key works on all versions of Microsoft, like Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

How to save screenshots after pressing the PRTSCN button?

The Prtscn button can only take a screenshot but not save it. You can say that it will only copy the screen area. You need to paste it into photo editors like Paint, Adobe Photoshop, and Corel Draw to save it in PNG or JPEG format.

  • So what you have to do is open Paint or any editing software.
  • And then just press CTRL + V.
  • You can also crop and edit it there.


We can also take screen shots by using the ALT + Prtscn key.

If you want to take a screenshot of the only selected area that you are working in, you can use the Alt + PrtScn Short key. To save this shot in a png or jpg file, you have to paste it in an editor like Paint or Adobe Photoshop. This key will copy the screen to a clipboard.


Snip and Sketch Tools of the Windows 10 version.

Another best and easiest way to take screenshots is the use of the snip and sketch tools in Windows 10. You can annotate, customize, and share your screenshots by using this tool.

How to activate the snip and sketch tools.

By using the Windows Start button and by pressing the shortcut key (Windows key + Shift + S), you can activate the Snip and Sketch tools in Windows.

Your screen brightness will be decreased and you will find a mini menu on the top of your screen. This menu will give you options (rectangular, free form, and full screen capture).

After taking the screenshot, it will be copied to the clipboard. You will have to paste it into editing software to save it. Here you can choose the format like PNG or JPEG in which you want to save it.

This is also a very useful key for taking screenshots. This key is used to copy the active working area. In other words, the screen where you are working on. Another advantage of this key is that it can also work in Windows 7, and 10 as well.

If you want to save the screenshots directly into the computer, then you have to press this keys.This shortcut key will save your screenshot directly into the computer. This key will save your screenshot in image file.
